Breakfast

As we age, we generally have less need for large meals. Do not be alarmed if your parent does not want much breakfast. Follow the simple ayurvedic advice that one should eat when hungry and drink when thirsty.

Morning is a great time to have medicinal drinks such as ginger tea with a little honey, or aloe vera with fruit juice. Either one helps digestion. Having these first things in the morning means they are not so easily forgotten. If appetite is not a problem then a simple meal of hot cooked cereal (maybe one fortified with vitamin B-12 and folic acid) and pureed fruit with chai is a good choice. Heavier foods like eggs and bacon can be a digestive challenge but do remember the old song, “A little of what you fancy does you good.” Smaller portions of the food you love will provide a good option so there is no feeling of deprivation. Check to see what feels better and if these protein foods tend to sit a little heavily save them a brunch for special occasions.
