Afternoon

Try and get out and about. Being with others is important and spending time with family is precious. Keeping in touch with peers as well as being with younger people helps you keep young. It is also important to get out into sunlight. You need 25-30 minutes, four to five times a week for your body to get enough vitamin D to keep calcium absorption up. With so many scares about skin cancer we have become sun phobic. All things in moderation please.

A snack may be in order especially if dinner is going to be light. A sweet treat and a good cup of tea would be in order or a glass of wine on special occasions. Just stay away from the very sugary, salty and fatty foods. Whole grain cookies, fruit pie or cake or whole grain crackers with hummus and chutney would be a good choice.

Music, Fun & Games

Researchers from Finland have found that listening to music in the early stages after a stroke can improve patients speed and quality of recovery. They found that if stroke patients listened to music for a couple of hours a day, their verbal memory and focused attention recovered better and they had a more positive mood than patients who did not listen to anything or who listened to audio books. This is because music stimulates the brain and helps it to keep beneficial thought patterns organized. Music from a time when we were young and fit has been shown to be most rejuvenating.

Do something that helps communication skills like a board game or discussion group. Puzzles and reading will help keep mental functions sharp.
