Turmeric: The Anti-Everything Ingredient

WHAT IS TURMERIC?

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a miracle ingredient from the rich body of Ayurvedic knowledge. It grows as a rhizome (root stem) and is easily identified in its beautiful golden yellow color powder on the spice and supplement racks. In Ayurveda, turmeric is beneficial for all the doshas. The heating property of turmeric balances Kapha and Vata doshas, while the astringent taste balances the Pitta dosha.

In South Asia, the traditional use of turmeric ranges from healing wounds, alleviating pain, increasing immunity and of course as a mainstay cooking spice that gives the distinctive color and flavor to the curries. During traditional wedding rituals of India, Turmeric paste is applied on the skin of the bride and groom for a bright, glowing complexion.
